Meet the presenters

Gerrie Jerling is Chief Test Technician at Rheinmetall Denel Munition, with more than 15 years of experience in product qualification and environmental testing. He has led the management and continuous development of advanced testing facilities, supported major qualification projects, and played a key role in test planning, facility upgrades, and technical investigations. Gerrie brings extensive expertise in environmental testing, test engineering, and the practical application of qualification standards in safety-critical industries.-

Luke van Eyk is a Mechanical Engineer and Research Officer at the University of Pretoria's Research Activity in Mechanised Mining Systems (RAMMS). Having recently completed his PhD, his work focuses on digital twins, machine learning, and physics-based modelling to improve the performance, maintenance, and reliability of mining equipment. Luke is passionate about transforming complex engineering data into practical insights that drive smarter decision-making across the mining industry.

Nelis van der Walt is a Mechanical Engineer at Winder Controls with a PhD in Engineering from the University of Pretoria. His experience spans mechanical engineering, vibration analysis, condition monitoring, experimental testing, and machine learning. With a strong background in both academic research and practical engineering, Nelis focuses on understanding complex mechanical systems, identifying potential faults, and applying data-driven approaches to solve real-world engineering challenges.

Nelis van der Walt Winder Controls

Dr André van Heerden is a registered Professional Engineer with more than 50 years of experience in mechanical and systems engineering. His career has included senior engineering roles across defence, nuclear, power generation, aviation and rail, with specialist expertise in structural and dynamic analysis, modelling and simulation, test and evaluation, and product qualification. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and has worked extensively with finite element analysis, fatigue and life assessment, and the testing and verification of complex engineering systems and structures. He has also lectured at the University of Pretoria and presented his work at engineering conferences and industry seminars.

Dr André van Heerden Centauri

Duter Struwig is a Mechanical Engineer at M-Tech Industrial, working in verification, validation and engineering simulation using the Flownex Simulation Environment. He applies simulation to complex engineering challenges and performs independent calculations to verify software and component performance. Duter holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, and an MEng from North-West University, with a strong technical background in computational fluid dynamics, condition monitoring, fluid mechanics and mechanical design.

Jaundré Taljaard is a Research and Development Engineer at WJ Engineering with more than ten years of industry experience. He specialises in the design, testing and optimisation of shaft conveyance systems for deep-level mining operations, with a strong focus on improving safety, reliability and operational efficiency. His work includes the development and application of smart monitoring technologies and advanced mechanical systems for mining infrastructure. Jaundré holds a BEng and MEng in Mechanical Engineering.

Liesl Smith is a Civil Engineer with more than 11 years of experience in heavy-haul railway engineering, asset management and maintenance optimisation. As a Track Engineer at Transnet Freight Rail, she leads engineering and optimisation initiatives across the Ore Corridor, with a focus on asset reliability, safety and network performance. Her expertise combines track and civil engineering with digital engineering, predictive maintenance, data analytics and condition monitoring to support smarter, data-driven engineering decisions.

Benedikt Trumpff is a Product Manager at HBK, responsible for the Mechanical & Structural solution portfolio. With extensive experience in industrial technology, measurement systems, digital solutions and IIoT, his career spans product management, R&D leadership and sensor development. He specialises in bringing together customer needs, technology and business strategy to develop practical, scalable solutions for industrial applications. Benedikt holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), specialising in Mechatronics and Microsystems Engineering.

Reuben Govender is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, with extensive experience in engineering education, research and experimental mechanics. His research focuses on high strain-rate material behaviour, impact testing and material characterisation, with particular expertise in Hopkinson Pressure Bar testing and Digital Image Correlation. His work has also expanded into advanced manufacturing and bioprinting, exploring the characterisation and 3D printing of non-rigid and biological materials. Reuben holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UCT and has contributed extensively to research, postgraduate supervision and engineering education.
